Relationships - How to Fight the Right Way

Anyone that has ever been in a relationship can attest to the fact that fighting is always a part of relationships. No matter how much you love and care for your partner there are going to be times when you disagree and fight. But that's ok, fighting is healthy, as long as you fight fairly.

When you and your partner get into that inevitable fight there are unwritten rules that should be followed. There are rules about what you should say and rules about how you should say it. If you follow these rules and fight fairly, fights can actually be healthy for the relationship. It has been proven that couples who fight fairly actually have a more intimate relationship and deeper understanding of one another.

What To Say?

o When you want to talk to your significant other about something that has been bothering you, make sure that you are specific when you initiate the conversation. This will help them understand what you think is wrong right away.

o When you bring up your grievances, make sure that you are criticizing your partner's behavior not their character. Do not insult or belittle them. If your partner feels that you are attacking their character, they will feel hurt and betrayed. For example, if you think that they were rude to you, do not call them rude, specifically say that they were acting rude. There's a difference.

o Don't simply complain. State what you think is wrong, why you think it's wrong, and how you would like it fixed.

o Do not bring your partner's family into the argument. This will just make them become defensive.

o Don't try to tell your partner how they feel. They know how they feel so let them tell you.

How To Say It?

o Do not yell. Yelling can be very harmful both to your significant other and others witnessing the fight, especially if there are children around. Remember, if you fight in front of your kids, you change them forever.

o Do not be sarcastic or angry. Both tones are very hurtful and they do not help to convey a point.

o Listen! Don't cut each other off. Let your significant other say what they need to say, and when they are finished speaking, it will be your turn to respond.

o Be tolerant. Listen to everything your spouse has to say without getting defensive. If they are fighting fairly, they are not trying to hurt you.

o Focus on one thing at a time. When you have resolved one issue then you can move on to another one. This will keep you from overloading your partner with grievances, making them feel overwhelmed and hopeless.

o Give your partner some time to react and respond. Don't demand an instantaneous solution. Sometimes just giving each other some space and walking away from each other to think is beneficial.

Ending The Fight

o Saying the right things and saying them the right way is only half of a fair fight. In order to make sure that the fight is truly fair you need to end it the right way also.

o Do not go to bed without resolving a fight. As more time passes, the fight will become harder and harder to resolve. It is better to stay up and fight all night than to go to sleep angry. Holding a grudge over a small thing can snowball into a huge problem.

o Always try to come to a compromise. It is the best way to resolve a fight. Don't begin a fight with the mindset that it has to end the way you want it to.

o At the end of the fight apologize, especially if you hurt your partner. The fight shouldn't be about right and wrong, it should be about fixing a problem and strengthening the relationship.

Arguments are the hardest part of relationships, but they are necessary and if done in the right manner, they can strengthen your bond even more. Even though it may seem hard at times, try to always fight fairly. Fair fights will only strengthen relationships. When fighting with your partner, remember that you still love and care about them and you still need to respect them. People who keep this in mind during a fight only benefit from it.

Failed Relationships?

As the saying goes, "It takes two to tango." Literally, in a relationship, both should give and take and not only take and take. To make a relationship work, each person should think of the other person's needs and wants. The most important thing here is the love that they both share. It is never going to work if the relationship goes in one-way. Since there are two persons involved, it should always be a two-way relationship. Below is a list of some of the reasons why relationships fail:

1.) MISUNDERSTANDING =

this is one of the most common reasons why couples fight. Sometimes, the words used aren't exactly what they mean. Like with text messaging, abbreviations in text messages sometimes can be mistaken for another word which causes them to fight more.

2.) JEALOUSY =

if the man or woman is too jealous of so many things, like work, friends, family, pets, etc. it would always resolve into breaking up. I know some people who broke up because of these reasons. A person has to balance their time with their partners in order for them keep track of their relationship. If one of them gives top priority for friends or work, and sort of neglects the partner, it may resolve to break ups.

3.) "WE'RE JUST FRIENDS!" (THIRD PARTY) =

yeah right! You're just friends but your partner caught you cuddling in a cozy restaurant! Who would believe that?

4.) LYING =

No one likes being lied to especially when the one lying is the one you love. Some people would call their partners and say, "Honey, I have meeting so we won't be able to meet tonight". Then, you see your partner in a bar with his friends or a friend of his would mention what they did last night.

5.) POSSESSIVENESS =

this is totally annoying because your partner would never want you to go out with your friends and would like you to be forever with him or her only. Gosh! You're a person too! You have your own friends too!

6.) RELIGION =

this is a very uncommon reason for others, because there's the word "compromise" right? But for some, who really have different views in their religion would always argue about their beliefs, they tend to drag their partner into their own viewpoint. Some people, just don't like to change their religion so they just have to find a partner who has the same point of view. Religion is something that partners should never ever fight about. The thing is, I have my religion, you have your religion so let's keep it that way! But for some, that just won't do, it's either you change your religion or just break up.

7.) "YOUR PARENTS DON'T LIKE ME!" =

I have a friend who was really pissed off with her boyfriend's parents because every time they would go to his house, the parents would show the girl that they really don't like her by glaring, mumbling words like "she's here again", and making her feel that she really is not welcome there. Total piss off!

8.) MOMMA'S BOY! =

mom's who spoiled their "baby boy" and loves them too much would not let any woman take him away from them, so they do many things to get rid of the girlfriend.

9.)ROUTINE! =

a relationship should always have surprises and should be lots of fun! That's mostly in the early stages of the relationship though. But for some, when they have been together for quite some time, they tend to do things in a routine way, that the partner becomes bored and tired of doing the same things all the time.

10.) PRIVACY =

there are just some things that needs to be left untouched. Some people do not like their partners to browse through some of their things, emails, letters, phone messages, etc. It just shows that you don't trust your partner that much so you really had to see every single thing he has.

11.) DON'T PUT ME DOWN! =

if the partner makes the other feel less important like saying negative things all the time. This is really not healthy for a relationship like, making the partner feel embarrassed in public places and then calling them stupid or using names, that's totally way out of hand. I, myself experienced this kind wherein for him, I'm always ugly, annoying, stupid, etc. It made me realize that he should just find another girl if he would just put me down instead of encourage me to improve. With this kind of partner, you don't deserve that kind of treatment, believe me! Life would be better without a person who puts you down in any way he can.

Well, these are just SOME of the reasons why relationships fail. The ones I wrote down were reasons why some of my friends' and my relationships failed. I know there are a lot more but let's just end it here for now. Just remember, talk it out first before you break up. If you think your relationship can still be saved, do it. But if you can't take it anymore, don't be a martyr! There's someone out there for you!
